Dolphin Watching Experiences in Sesimbra

· Catarina Mendes

Dolphin watching in Sesimbra is one of the most captivating activities for nature and marine life enthusiasts. Located on Portugal's Atlantic coast, Sesimbra offers ideal conditions for spotting wildlife, including various cetacean species, seabirds, and fish inhabiting the crystal-clear waters of the Parque Marinho Professor Luiz Saldanha, a protected area within the Parque Natural da Arrábida.

Species Spotted During Tours

The most common cetaceans observed during our tours are short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). We also frequently encounter seabirds such as northern gannets (Morus bassanus), Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis), great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo), and various gull species, including the lesser black-backed gull (Larus fuscus) and yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis). Other sightings include razorbills (Alca torda), among others.

In summer, sightings of other species become more frequent, such as the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), blue shark (Prionace glauca), and swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Larger whale species and other dolphin species have also been increasingly spotted.

We've also recorded sightings of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus—the second-largest whale species after the blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus), and sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis).

Other dolphin species observed include orcas (Orcinus orca), harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas), and Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus).

Best Time for Dolphin Watching

Dolphins can be spotted year-round. The most favorable season for sightings runs from March to November, when weather conditions are more stable and species diversity and abundance are higher. In summer, the increased frequency of tours and clearer waters make the experience even more thrilling, with opportunities to see dolphins swimming in groups and performing impressive acrobatics. During colder months (December–February), we also conduct cetacean watching tours whenever weather permits—just dress warmly!

How the Tours Work

Dolphin-watching tours in Sesimbra typically last 2–3 hours. Look for tours organized by specialized companies, accompanied by expert guides who share information about dolphins, their behavior, local biodiversity, and conservation initiatives.

At Daydream Experience, our tours are always led by a marine biologist experienced in recognizing the behavioral patterns of various marine species. Despite our familiarity with their habits, it's important for visitors to understand that these are wild animals living in their natural environment, and their exact location is never guaranteed—every day is a new adventure to find them! This happens because in Portugal and much of Europe, feeding, touching, or swimming with dolphins is prohibited, meaning these animals are never waiting for us in the same spot. This makes these interactions even more special and challenging, relying on our guides' expertise and geographic sighting patterns to locate them.

Some tours combine dolphin watching with snorkeling in protected areas along the Arrábida coast, allowing guests to explore the region's underwater richness.

Sustainable Tourism and Conservation

Whales and dolphins face numerous threats, many caused by human activity, including bycatch, entanglement in fishing gear, and marine pollution (plastics and harmful chemicals).

Unregulated tourism can also affect their well-being. That's why dolphin watching in Sesimbra must be conducted responsibly—maintaining safe distances and avoiding unnecessary disturbances. It's important to choose companies that promote sustainable practices to ensure these experiences don't negatively impact the animals. Daydream Experience holds an official license (AOC/21/2022) for cetacean observation, issued by ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas), the regulatory and protective body for the Parque Marinho Professor Luiz Saldanha.

Tips for an Unforgettable Experience

If you're planning a dolphin-watching tour in Sesimbra, consider these recommendations:

  • Book in advance: High demand in summer means early reservations are recommended.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable clothing and a windbreaker—temperatures at sea can be cooler.
  • Sun protection and hydration: Use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and bring water to stay hydrated.
  • Camera and binoculars: Capture unique moments without disturbing the animals. Binoculars, while not essential, help observe dolphins at a distance without disturbing them and make spotting them easier. You might even be the first to sight them and alert our crew! They're also useful for birdwatching.
  • Respectful mindset: Above all, come with an open mind and willingness to learn about ocean protection.

Dolphin watching in Sesimbra is a unique opportunity to connect with nature and understand the importance of marine conservation. Through responsible practices and environmental awareness, we can ensure these magnificent creatures continue to inhabit Arrábida's waters for generations to come.
